It was unusual in this time for women to witness a Deed. When they did, it was generally an indication of relationship. Therefore, Elizabeth is most likely Adam's wife.

Adam died c __/__/1816. The last census record that Adam appears in is the 1810 census. Therefore he probably died between 1810 and 1820. Furthmore, we know from a 1817 court record part of his estate was recorded as being sold. He most likely dided ca 1816..¹

Adam registered to pay taxes at Pitt County, North Carolina, in __/__/1762. In his entry in the List of Taxables for the Secretarys office at Wilmington, North Carolina, it was recorded that he was white and owned no slaves.

Adam bought property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on on 05/29/1764. It is recorded, that an Adam Laughan bought 200 acres from John Simpson (Patent 1764) for 10 pounds. From a review of existing records, it appears that Adam Laughan and Adam McGlawhorn are the same person.

The deed is recorded in Deed Book C, page 81 at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville, North Carolina..¹

Blaxton (Braxton?) and Lazarus Smith. This land was a portion of the John Simpson patent that Adam purchased in 1764. Geo. Granberry and Anthony Williams were witnesses.

Adam sold property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 05/04/1807. In either 1807 or 1809 (both appear in the record), " Cannon Smith, sheriff of Pitt County, exposed to public sale the goods & chattles lands and tenements Adams McGlohon senr." Adam had been convicted of a judgment by Charles Jenkins against him for a debt of 94 pounds 18 shillings plus 4 pounds 12 shillings adjudged for taxes and cost in the suit. Charles Jenkins bought the "tract of land... being the Estate of Adams McGlohon" for $175, being the highest bidder. This land adjoined Benjamin Blount's patent, Fredrick Mills, Joshua Nobles, Charles Harriss and Griffin patent. The deed was not registered until the November term of court in 1817.

The deed is recorded in Deed Book AA, page 28 at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville, North Carolina.

Arthur bought property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 08/10/1801. It is recorded that Adams McGlohon sold to Arthur McGlawhon 202 acres adjoining Fanniford Griffin for 10 pounds. Wm. Broome and Charles Harris were witnesses.

It is almost certain that Arthur McGlohon was Adam's son. It was not unusual for money to change hands between relatives, even between father and son. If the price paid for a piece of land was significantly less than the "going rate," a family relationship is likely. From the other deeds of this time, we know that the 10 pounds Arthur paid for the 202 acres of land was considerably below market value.
