"... Begining at a stake Benjamin Manning & Caleb Tripp corner and runs South six East to a pine. Thence North fifty two East twenty nine poles to a stake. Thence North eight six East twenty three poles to a stake. Thence North fifty six East twenty seven poles to the center of three pines. Thence North fifty two poles to a pine. Thence a north westwardly course to the begining. Containing fifty five acres more or less..."

On October 28, 1904 the wedding announcement for Mary Dennis and Charles Manning was published in the Pitt County Daily Reflector. It is certainly one of the most unusual wedding announcements ever published! The articles is as follows:

"Wednesday evening at the home of the bride, Mr. Charles Manning and Miss Mary Dennis were united in the holy bonds of matrimony, Squire J.J. Stokes officiating. Mr. Manning will pull the scales at about 120 pounds, while his charming bride will balance them at something over 500 pounds. We wish them a long and happy life."

Unfortunately that was not to be. Mary died from complications on March 18, 1907 seventeen days after giving birth to her only child, Linwood.
