Biography*

On Monday May 3rd 1999, Marlene's home was completely demolished when struck by one of the worst Oklahoma tornadoes on record. Luckily, Marlene heard a Hurricane warning announcement on the TV and rushed her family into their storm shelter in the backyard. She said the storm hit within moments of them entering their shelter. Fortunately, they were not hurt. Unfortunately, her home was destroyed along with their possessions and many irreplaceable keepsakes. The tornado was caused by a slow-moving storm that brought several days of severe weather to much of the South from May 3-6, 1999. The deadliest tornadoes in decades ripped across Oklahoma late Monday the 3rd, killing at least 44 people while demolishing entire neighborhoods, including Marlene's in Dell City Oklahoma, just outside of Oklahoma City. The tornado that tore through the Oklahoma City area was classified as an F-5, the second strongest category, on the Fujita Scale. Monday's tornadoes also caused at least 500 million in damage to homes and businesses. More than 10,500 homes and 47 businesses were destroyed and at least 748 people were injured. The tornado had the highest win speed ever recorded. Scientists measured the wind speed at 318 mph. The record-setting wind occurred about 7 p.m. The wind speed was measured with a truck-mounted Doppler radar, of type used in the Doppler On Wheels (DOW) project at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. The fastest speed previously measured was 286 mph clocked by a portable Doppler radar April 26, 1991, in a tornado near Red Rock, Oklahoma. The 318-mph speed would put the tornado only 1-mph below an F-6 on the 0-to-6 Fujita Scale. No tornado has ever been classified an F-6. Later that week her brother, Kenny Braxton, flew out to Oklahoma to help Marlene and her family salvage what she could and to help her with insurance matters and to sign up for assistance programs.
