Census 1850 - free* On 09/17/1850,Reuben was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census at Pitt County, North Carolina. The following entry was made in the Pitt County Federal Population Census for Reuben and his family: Reuben, age 60, farmer; Margaret (Keel), age 60; Reuben, age 20; Rittie, age 17; Elizabeth Tyson, age 30; Margaret A. Tyson, age 4. Not sure how Elizabeth and the younger Margaret are related to Reuben.

Both Reuben Sr. and Reuben Jr. were laborers. No one in the household could read or write and Reuben did not own any real estate. One confusing entry in this census record is the ages of Reuben Jr. and Rittie. According to Rittie's grand daughter, Ellen Avery Pilgreen, Rittie and Reuben Jr. were twins.

His household was recorded on Pages 32A and 32B under the Anderson District.

Historian Bill Kittrell documents Pitt County’s cemeteries in two volumes

Saturday, October 06, 2007

The Daily Reflector

Bill Kittrell has a passion for the past — specifically the people who once walked the earth but who now reside beneath Pitt County soil.

“My friends have referred to me as ‘Cemetery Man.’” the Greenville historian said. “One went so far as to say that I was the only man he knew that had been in over 800 cemeteries and walked out of them.”

Kittrell’s fascination with graveyards made him the perfect candidate to compile a survey of all the burial plots in Pitt County — from the fenced family cemetery with a single tombstone to the manicured burial grounds with more than 5,000 plots; from the unmarked resting places of slaves to the monument-laden graveyards of Greenville’s wealthy founders; from neatly kept churchyards to remote overgrown burying grounds with illegible tombstones.

After years of work, the document Kittrell’s wife Mary refers to as his “legacy” — all 1,700 pages of it — is complete. The Pitt County Historical Society has published his “Cemetery Survey of Pitt County” in two soft-bound volumes. It will be available for purchase beginning Saturday.

“The Pitt County Historical Society is proud of Bill’s work and is excited about this, our latest publication,” said society president Anne Sneed. “This book goes hand in hand with our earlier publications, ‘Chronicles of Pitt County, Volume I and II.’”

“I think this is going to be an invaluable addition to the recorded history of Pitt County and a wonderful gift to genealogists all over the country,” said historical society member Sandra Hunsucker. “We’ve already sold books far and wide over the Internet for people to use as a research tool.”

Kittrell’s roots go deep in Pitt County. His family came here in the late 1780s, and his desire to trace his own lineage inspired him to visit local cemeteries.

“My interest in family genealogy began in the late 1970s and was rekindled in earnest in 1982, when the Pitt County Historical Society published its first volume of ‘Chronicles of Pitt County, North Carolina,’” he said. ”I had already surveyed some of my family cemeteries, and I then began to expand my coverage to include other grave sites in the county.”

“He’s always been interested in history,” said Kittrell’s wife, Mary. “When I would want him home mowing the grass, he’d be off in a cemetery. He can’t ride by a cemetery without wondering who’s in there.”

Kittrell already had surveyed about 250 grave sites when he was approached by the Pitt County Historical Society about producing a complete record of all the county’s cemeteries for publication.

“About 25 years ago, the state encouraged every county in North Carolina to do a cemetery survey,” said historical society member Jerri Sutton. “Although some local researchers had done surveys on selected sites, there was no comprehensive survey of all the local cemeteries.”

In 2002, the society asked Kittrell if he would undertake the project — and for the past five years, he has devoted part of nearly every day to completing the survey.

“All cemeteries that I am aware of have been recorded, a total of over 870 sites and more than 48,000 names,” he said.

Kittrell was determined to complete his task, despite the fact that he is now legally blind and wears a hearing aid. His wife, Mary, is his chauffeur and secretary, driving him around the county and recording the data they collected together.

“I couldn’t have done this without her,” Kittrell said. “She knew I wanted to complete this survey, so she gave of her time for five years to see this comprehensive endeavor completed.”

Walking in Cherry Hill Cemetery, the resting place of some of Greenville’s wealthy former residents, Kittrell points out a few of the interesting grave sites there. There’s the massive monument to Robert Lee Humber, inscribed with his accomplishments. The final resting place of Gov. Thomas J. Jarvis. The elaborate obelisks, carved angels and crosses that adorn the graves of Greenville’s earlier residents.

“I have always had an interest in the history of Pitt County,” he said. “Doing the cemetery survey helped me to find many of the historical locations I had always heard about.

”Farmers and landowners were cooperative in allowing me on their property. Fishermen and hunters gave me locations of cemeteries hidden from view; some went so far as to take me to the site. Often family members made me aware of family graves that they wanted recorded.”

Kittrell said he reckons he’s spent more than 7,000 volunteers hours on the project.

He’s trekked deep into woods nearly a mile from the road. He’s crawled on his belly through brambles, tearing his clothing and skin in the process. He’s climbed down into open vaults to read the inscriptions on the broken slabs. He’s been confronted by snakes — and nearly bitten. And once, not realizing a site had recently been flooded, he sank into a grave up to his waist.

“After a cemetery was located, a problem of deciphering the inscriptions on the tombstones often arose,” Kittrell said. “Mary and I were always well equipped with chalk. After rubbing the stone with white chalk, the inscription was usually legible — although we encountered some broken or cracked stones and ones on which the lettering was chipped and impossible to decipher.”

And some graves had no markers at all to distinguish them.

“We used the grave-dowsing technique to find unmarked graves,” he said. He demonstrated the technique by grasping a bent copper rod in each hand. Holding the rods parallel, he began walking over a grave in Cherry Hill Cemetery. As he passed over the grave site, the two rods slowly swung together until they crossed one another — marking the hollow place in the ground.

“It’s somewhat eerie and very interesting to see and feel the movement of the rods in your hands,” he said.

Kittrell said he’s never had any supernatural encounter, despite all the time he’s spent in graveyards. And he’s only been denied access to one family cemetery during his research.

How does he feel about finally seeing the survey in print?

“I’m surprised it’s so big,” he said. “I wouldn’t have expected it to take up two volumes.

“The thing that surprised me most of all were how many cemeteries there were just in Pitt County.”

Census 1910*Martha was listed as the head of a family on the 1910 Census at Contentnea Township, Pitt County, North Carolina, in Winterville, Town. In the 1910 Census, Martha Craft (Cro), age 63 and a widow, was listed as the head of the household that included her grandson Leslie Craft age 15, her granddaughters; Lillie Mills age 9, Dazy Mills age 7, and Annie Mills age 17. Martha's husband Richard died in 1906.

The two youngest girls are the children of Henry John Mills and Martha's daughter, Queenie Emma Craft Mills, and since they were married in 1900, Annie must be Henry's daughter from a previous marriage.

Leslie Craft is the son of Queenie Emma Craft and Ed Worthington. They were never married.

Emma gave birth to William Mills four days before this census count was conducted at Martha's home. He was born on April 22, 1910. One can only assume that Martha was taking care of her grandchildren while Emma recovered from the birth of her fourth child.

Martha was listed as a owning the farm they lived on free and clear of any mortgage or debt. Both she and Annie were listed as being able to read and write. None of the other children could read or write and only Lille had attended school in 1910. Martha was also listed as the mother of nine children with seven being alive at the time of the census..8
