Birth*Mildred was born at on Reedy Branch Road approximately 1/2 mile North of NC Highway 11., Winterville, Pitt County, North Carolina, on 01/31/1906.1,2,6,7,3,4
She was the daughter of Rev William Alonza Dail and Hettie Louvenia Barber Dail
Marriage*She married Leslie Allen Humbles in at Free Will Baptist Parsonage, Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina, on on 12/24/1925. Mommee and Harold's daddy were next door neighbors when they were children. Their families' gardens were next to each other.

Mommee felt that Poppa didn't like Leslie. She didn't know of anything about Leslie that Poppa disapproved of or didn't like. She believes that Poppa was afraid of loosing her. Mommee worked hard on the farm and in the house. Mommee felt like she had to be the boy and help Poppa.

Mildred and Leslie were in love and had decided to get married. For fear of what Poppa might do, they decided to elope. They got their physicals at the doctor but were too young to purchase their marriage license. Leslie's daddy, Stephen Humbles, bought it for them. They contacted the preacher and set it up for them to come over after Mildred got off work on December 24. Only a few people knew of their plans.

Mommee had made her own wedding dress and "teddy". It was at Aunt Susie's house, where Mommee stayed during the week while she was working at White's Store.

Mommee found out that Ben Dail told Poppa of their wedding plans early that morning. Mommee sent word to Leslie that they couldn't wait until after work. They needed to get married during their time off at lunch.

Poppa told Wilton to put his gun in the car. He was going to stop this wedding. Wilton was worried about Poppa getting caught with a gun and what might happen, so he disassembled the gun and put it under the seat.

Leslie parked behind White's store and waited for Mildred to get off for lunch. Together they snuck out through a hole in the fence and went to the preachers house. The preacher was bar-b-cueing a pig in the yard and was very surprised to see them so early. They had to ask a stranger off the street to be a witness and they quickly tied the knot. Leslie drove Mildred back to White's Store and dropped her off. Poppa arrived very shortly after Mildred's return.

Mildred was running the cash register when Poppa came into the store. He stood with some other folks in the store and raised his voice loud enough for Mildred to hear everything he said. The group was talking about how someone had gotten killed near town earlier in the week and Poppa commented that, "there might be some others killed tonight if what he had heard was going to happen. He was sure he could stop this, one way or another." Mildred finished with her customer and then went over to Poppa. She asked him what he meant by the things he was saying. Poppa told her that he wasn't going to let them get married. Mildred looked at him and told him it was too late, Leslie and her were already married. Poppa left.

That evening Leslie picked Mildred up from White's Store and they went back to Leslie's parents house for a Wedding supper. Poppa came out and began walking back and forth along the edge of the garden. Poppa called out to one of Mildreds brothers who had come over to eat. After he had left, Mildred became worried that something was wrong. She walked back over to her parents house. There she saw Poppa crying. Mildred's Sister, Beatrice, told Mildred, "Poppa was crying 'cause you got married.".1,2,6,3,4
Death*She died on 03/23/2007 at age 101.8
Employment*Mildred's worked for White's Store as a Clerk and Bookkeeper in at Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina, for 43 years starting in in __/__/1923. Starting in 1923, Mommee worked for White's Store in downtown Greenville for 43 years. Her first 33 years as a clerk and her her last 10 years as Bookkeeper. After retiring, she continued to do inventory for 9 of the White's store.

When Mommee first started working, she made $12 a week and she paid her husbands parent's $9 a week for room and board for her and her husband. Her husband, Leslie Allen Humbles, was share-cropping with his daddy, Stephen Allen Humbles, and they didn't receive any income until the crops were sold. Mommee and her husband were saving the earnings from farming to build a home..9
Education*She was educated; Mommie graduated from Winterville High School and then attended the Free Will Baptist Seminary in Ayden, North Carolina.
Biography* Mommee was named after a foreign missionary, Venetia Cox.

Mommee remembers a very special Christmas when she was a child. They all went to Church that evening and there beneath this huge Christmas tree was a baby doll in a stroller. "It was the prettiest thing she had ever seen." She couldn't take her eyes off that baby doll and stroller. All she could think about was how she wished that she would be the one to get it. All of the other presents were passed out first and finally her name was called for the baby and stroller. "She was the happiest girl in the whole world." She took that stroller home and placed it right beside her bed. It was the only present she got that year, but it was the best present she had ever gotten.

Mommee remembers a time when she was at Lemmie's mother's brothers house for dinner and two boys, Lester Allen and Leslie Humbles, showed up to eat too. Mommee liked them both at that time, and didn't want to upset either one of them. After dinner they went outside and wondered over to the grape vine. Both those boys fed Mommee so many grapes she thought she was going to pop.

Lester's folks sold horses. So Lester always showed up on a pretty shinney horse. But he always showed up late in the afternoon. Mommee knew this was because he went to see his other girl friend who lived further away first. She knew he was stopping by to see her on his way home.

Mommee knew Leslie was the one for her. She really loved him. She said, "He was the kind of man who was home when it was dark. She liked that. She wanted to be with someone who wanted to be at home at night."

Poppa wouldn't let Mommee go out on a date unless there was a chaperone or another couple going. Mommee remembers double dating with her room mate, Cassie Lee Harris and her date Amos. They were in Leslie's car. To avoid being seen by anyone who might know them, they decided to go to the picture show in Kinston. Mommee knew Poppa wouldn't approve of her going to the picture show. Mommee remembers all of them getting so tickled after they stopped to get some bananas to eat on the way. She asked Leslie if he wanted her to peel his banana. He answered yes. When she did, the banana broke off and Mommee said, "Lord a mercy, I have broke your banana." They all couldn't keep from laughing.
