Mr. Manning will pull the scales at about 120 pounds, while his charming bride will balance them at something over 500 pounds. We wish them a long and happy life." Unfortunately that was not to be. Article in the Eastern reflector on July 21, 1905: Miss Rutha Dennis died at her home near here (Ayden, NC) Saturday night about 9 o'clock, aged 90 years. In her earlier life she attained right much notoriety, owing to her immense size, great physical power and a very masculine appearance. It is said that in her best days she could easily lift a barrel of turpentine under each aram and place them in a cart. She was utterly devoid of fear and woe be the man who dared tamper on what she considered her rights. Yet she was kindhearted and noted for her strict adherence to honesty. Hers has been a useful life and may her future be blessed with such rewards its merits and peaceful her ashes rest until resurrection day. .2,4,3 |

| Census 1850 - free* | Skilton was listed as a household member living with Manthy (Mantha or Maulther) Dennis on the 1850 Census at Burney's District, Pitt County, North Carolina. Mantha is recorded as the head of a household. She is 36 years old and the following people are living in her household: Rutha Dennis, age 26; Jacky Ann Dennis, age 12; and Skelter Dennis, age 9. Jacky and Skelter (Skilton) are Mantha's children and from the 1880 Census we know Rutha is her sister. Her entry is recorded in the Pitt County 1850 Federal Population Census for Burney's District as household 642. .11 |
| Deed* | Skilton bought property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 10/22/1857. The following is a transcript of this deed recorded in the Pitt County, North Carolina Deed Book OO on pages 620-621. A microfilmed copy is located at the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina. "Mantha Dennis To Skilton & Mary L Dennis (Deed of Gift) Know all men of these proceedings that I Mantha Dennis for and in consideration of the natural affection which I have and love towards my Son Skilton Dennis and Daughter Mary L Dennis and the further consideration of one Dollar cash to me in hand paid I do hereby give, grant, bargain, Sell, convey and deliver unto my Son and daughter one tract of land containing twenty acres adjoining the Lands of Robert Harris, William Harrington & others. One other tract containing ten acres more or less adjoining the lands of Joab Harrington Senior, William Harrington & others its being the land I purchased of Arthur Dennis also my house hold and Kitchen furniture of every description also my stocks of Hogs and Cattle also one Horse to have and to hold the Said Lands, house hold & Kitchen furniture, Hogs, Cattle and Horse from me and my Heirs and from all other persons whatever. Witnep my hand and Seal Oct. 22, 1857 (made) Martha X Dennis (mark) Witnep Jas. Jno. Dancey (sp) M.G. Cherry (sp) October 22 1857, This was the written Deed of Gift from Mantha Dennis to Skilton Dennis and Mary Dennis Exhibitived before me and proven by the oath of M.G. Cherry one of the Subscribing witnepes thereto let it be Registered. Attest H Shepard (sp) Clerk" There are at least two interesting aspects to this deed. First of all, Mary Dennis is identified as Mantha's daughter. We have found no other documents mentioning Mary. She was not recorded in Manta's household in the 1850 Federal Population Census or any other Census records. Secondly this gift raises the question of why Mantha gave what appears to be her entire estate to her fifteen year-old son and her daughter. Mantha would live another 23 years. .12,13 |
