(female), age 5; W.C. (male), age 2;

Neither Arthur nor his wife could read or write. S.L., P.S. and D.E. had attended school in the past year. His personal estate was valued at $200.

His household was recorded on Page 138 under the Greenville Post Office.

Milit-Beg*

Arthur joined the Confederate Army, Infantry, as a Private at Pitt County, North Carolina, on on 07/09/1862. He was a 38-year-old residence of Pitt County, North Carolina.

On July 19, 1862, he mustered in as a substitute for John Moore into "K" Company North Carolina 17th Infantry. From a review of 1850 census records, we know Arthur's wife, Elizabeth, had a brother named John Moore. Could Arthur have substituted for him?

On January 20, 1863, he transferred into "E" Company 1st Light Infantry Regiment North Carolina 10th State Troops in exchange Private Dempsey Gay. He was listed as wounded June 15, 1864 (place not stated). He was furloughed August 3, 1864 for 40 days (place not stated). His date and method of discharge was not given.

Mantha was born c __/__/1783. Analyzing her age in the 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840 Pitt County Federal Population Census records determined her date of birth, we know she was born ca 1781. Starting with the 1800 census, her age was recorded as being 17 to 26. Adding 10 years from this age range, her age in 1810 could have been 27 to 36. Since her age is recorded in the 1810 census as being 27 to 45, her age must have been 27 to 36. Adding 10 years to this age range, her age in 1820 could have been 37 to 46. Since her age is recorded in the 1820 census as being 27 to 45, her age must have been 37 to 45. Adding 10 years to this age range, her age in 1830 could have been 47 to 55. Her entry in the 1830 Census must have been incorrect because her age is recorded 30 to 40. Based on the previous Census records and on the 1840 Census record to follow, her age must have been 47 to 55. Adding 10 years to this age range, her age in 1840 could have been 57 to 65. Since her age is recorded in the 1840 census as being 50 to 60, her age must have been 57 to 60. Therefore, Mantha was born sometime between 1780 and 1783..^1,2

She was the daughter of Arthur McGlawhorn and Mary McGlohon.

Jacky and Skelter (Skilton) are Mantha's children and from the 1880 Census we know Rutha is her sister.

Manthy sold property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 10/22/1857. The following is a transcript of this deed recorded in the Pitt County, North Carolina Deed Book OO on pages 620-621. A microfilmed copy is located at the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"Mantha Dennis To Skilton & Mary L Dennis (Deed of Gift)
Know all men of these proceedings that I Mantha Dennis for and in consideration of the natural affection which I have and love towards my Son Skilton Dennis and Daughter Mary L Dennis and the further consideration of one Dollar cash to me in hand paid I do hereby give, grant, bargain, Sell, convey and deliver unto my Son and daughter one tract of land containing twenty acres adjoining the Lands of Robert Harris, William Harrington & others. One other tract containing ten acres more or less adjoining the lands of Joab Harrington Senior, William Harrington & others its being the land I purchased of Arthur Dennis also my house hold and Kitchen furniture of every description also my stocks of Hogs and Cattle also one Horse to have and to hold the Said Lands, house hold & Kitchen furniture, Hogs, Cattle and Horse from me and my Heirs and from all other persons whatever. There are at least two interesting aspects to this deed. First of all, Mary Dennis is identified as Mantha's daughter. We have found no other documents mentioning Mary. She was not recorded in Manta's household in the 1850 Federal Population Census or any other Census records. Secondly this gift raises the question of why Mantha gave what appears to be her entire estate to her fifteen year-old son and her daughter. Mantha would live another 23 years.

Manthy was listed as the head of a family in the 1860 Federal Population Census at Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina. She was 45 years old and the following people lived in her household: her sister, Rutha Dennis, age 37; her children, Jacky Ann, age 22; and Skilton, age 19.

Manthy owned a farm valued at $300 and her personal property was valued at $100. She could not read or write.

Her entry is recorded on Page 181 in the Pitt County 1860 Federal Population Census as living in the Greenville Post Office District on Farm Number 1448. Her grandfather, Arthur McGlawhorn, farm was recorded on the same page as farm number 1442.

Manthy was listed as the head of a family in the 1870 Federal Population Census at Contentnea Township, Pitt County, North Carolina. She was recorded as the head of the household and her entry is as follows: Manthy, age 52, Keeping house; Ruthy, age 48, Domestic Servant; Jackan, age 30, at home; B.A. James, 28, Farm Hand; Martha Harris, age 12, at home. Jackan is Manthy's daughter, Jacky Ann. From later records, including the 1880 census record for Manthy's household. we know B.A. Jones is Jackan's husband. It is unclear who Martha is. Manthy could read and Ruthy could read and write.

Manthy's son Skilton lived on the farm beside of her.

Manthy's entry is recorded in the Pitt County 1870 Federal Population Census for Contentnea Township on Page 105A.

Manthy was listed as the head of a family in the 1880 Federal Population Census at Contentnea Township, Pitt County, North Carolina. She was recorded as the head of the household and her entry is as follows: Manthy, age 66 and suffering from cancer; Ruthy, age 59 and recorded as Manthy's sister; Benallen Jones, age 35; Jackan, age 39; Bryant, age 2. Jackan is Manthy's daughter, Jacky Ann. Benallen Jones is Jacky Ann's husband and Bryant is her son. Benallen is recorded as a farmer. None of them could read or write.

As noted above Manthy had cancer and she would die two months later.

Manthy's son Skilton lived on the farm beside of her.

Manthy's entry is recorded in the Pitt County 1880 Federal Population Census for Contentnea Township on Page 312.
