Edward died on 03/07/1909 at age 33. According to a family story shared by Mitzi Corbett Hobgood in 2002, her Aunt Bettie, told her that when they lived in the Yankee Hall Community, Pactolus, Ed Stanley refused to loan his buggy to a neighbor to go to church. An argument resulted and the neighbor shot Ed Stanley. The following excert from the local paper, The Eastern Reflector, on March 9, 1909 further collaborates this story. "We regret to report the death of Mr. Ed Davenport, which occurred at his home five miles from here, Sunday night. He leaves a wife and several small children to mourn his death. The Daily Reflector correspondent at Oakley, in a letter Tuesday, reported the death of Mr. Ed Davenport, of that section, but nothing was said in the letter about the cause of his death. Late Tuesday evening J. A. Person, a colored man and his wife, Venetia Person, were brought here and committed to jail under a magistrates's warrant, charging them with murder. No particulars could be learned except that Mr. Davenport and the colored man had some trouble last Friday night in which Mr. Davenport was shot through the arm by Person, and that from loss of blood from the wound he died Sunday night.".^1,3
