| Birth* | Mary was born at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 02/12/1838. This date of death is from her tombstone. In the 1870 Federal Population Census, as a member of her mother's household, her age is recorded as 35 which would mean she was born in 1835.

| She was the daughter of Hardee Thomas Craft and Ellen Faye McGlohon Craft. |
| Death* | Mary died on 11/12/1918 at age 80. Mary's Certificate of Death recorded her cause of death as cardiac dilatation. She was treated by Dr. Cox for three months before she died.

The undertaker is recorded as being A.G. Cox Manufacturing Company..1,2,5,3 |
| Burial* | Her body was interred at Winterville, Pitt County, North Carolina, at Craft Family Cemetery.1,2,5 |
| Court - civil* | Mary filled out a Warrant for Bastardy against Spier Weatherington at Pitt County, North Carolina, on on 04/08/1875. The Warrant reads as follows:
"....Whereas, complaint has been made before me this day, on the oath of Mary Craft that she has been deliveried of a child and said child is a bastard and liable to become a county charge..... Not executed on the account of the death of the defendant."
Although, the child's name was not given in this Warrant, it was most likely Henry Hazzard Craft born in 1874. He is the only known child of Mary.
From the 1870 Pitt County Federal Population Census we know that a Spier Wethington, age 39, was listed as the head of household 61 and Mary's brother, Richard Craft, was listed as the head of household 63. From deeds, we know Mary's property adjoined Richard's. Therefore, Spier lived within a few farms of Mary's farm. Spier was recorded as married to Margret and they had seven children age 3-12..7 |

| Milit-Beg* | Richard enlisted into the Confederate Army at Brunswick County, North Carolina, on on 06/03/1861 as a private. He joined 2nd Company H from New Hanover County which was mustered into State service on April 16, 1861 as "Captain Edward Dudley Hall's Company, Artillery." He was present and accounted for through December 1864.
After organizing at Wilmington, the company was stationed at Fort Caswell. It was ordered to Camp Advance to near Garysburg, then on to Richmond, Virginia on July 15, 1861. Next it moved to Camp Holmes and then on to Camp Potomac in Virginia. As part of Brigadier General Theophilus H. Holmes' command, the regiment moved to North Carolina on March 24, 1862. The regiment proceeded to the Cape Fear District. The company moved from Fort St. Philip to Fort Johnston to Fort Branch and on to Fort Holmes on Smith's Island in September 1863. Here it remained until the fort was evacuated on January 16, 1865. The companies were transported by steamer to Smithville and marched up to Fort Anderson on the 17th. They remained at Fort Anderson until the fort was evacuated after heavy fighting on February 19th. Falling back through Wilmington, they retired at Northeast River. The Confederate force retired at Duplin Cross Roads and went to camp at Rockfish Creek. Here orders were received to proceed to Kinston to meet the Federals advancing from New Bern. Arriving at Kinston on March 5, they engaged the enemy on the next day at Jackson's Mills and drove them from the field. On March 8, an unsuccessful attack was made on the Federals at Wise's Fork (Southwest Creek). The troops were then withdrawn to Goldsboro on March 12. Richard A. Craft was admitted to a hospital at Greensboro on March 10, 1865 from a hospital at Kinston. He had lost his right third finger.
On his brother, Frank's war casualty report (email from Kevin Craft dated 10-31-01) Richard is listed as being in the 7th North Carolina Artillery, company H..8 |
| Census 1870* | Richard was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census at Contentnea Township, Pitt County, North Carolina, NC. The following entry was made in the Pitt County Federal Population Census for Richard and his family: Richard, age 30, Farm Hand; Martha, age 25, Keeping Home; Mary, age 4; Silas, age 2.
Neither Richard nor his wife, Martha could read or write. He did not own any real estate..9 |
| Mortgage* | Richard gave legal title to Sophia Willoughby to secure a mortgage loan at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 04/17/1876. Richard and his wife Martha, Apsley Craft, Richard's sister, and Mary Craft, Richard's sister, took a mortgage for $127.50 at 8% per year against land they owned. The mortgage was executed on March 31, 1876 and was due May 1, 1876. There were two tracts of land involved: The "Old William Barbor" tract containing 105 acres more or less and another tract containing 35 acres more or less. The mortgage deed for this transaction is recorded in Book E3, Page 35.
This mortgage is somewhat of a mystery. They borrowed $127.50 for one month. From Kevin Craft's email dated 10-30-01, we now know that they needed the money to cover the doctors bill for Mary's 2 year old son, Hazzard. It is still unkown where they planned to obtain the funds, in such a short time period, to pay the money back. Whatever their plan, it did not materialize; Sophia foreclosed and their land was sold at public auction..10 |

Henry Skinner sold him 27 acres for $275. $175 was due December 1, 1882 and the remaining $100 with 8% interest was due December 1, 1883. The land was situated on the West side of Tar Road and bordered Weatherington's land. The deed is recorded in Book S3, Page 449.
The following is an excerpt from this deed: "....Know as this land conveyed Travis Butler by Abram Butler. Also the following personal property to wit one Dark Bay Mule about 15 years old to have and to hold...." .13 |
| Mlt pension* | Richard applied for a military pension at Pitt County, North Carolina, on on 06/10/1901. At age 66 Richard applies for a Soldier's Pension as a veteran of the Confederate Army. It states: "He was wounded in Kinston near the close of the War in 1865. He is old and worn out and not able to earn a living by manual labor and suffers with Hernia." Dr. B.T. Cox adds that Richard's disability for manual labor is fully one half.
The Pitt County Pension Board approved his pension request..14 |

Alfred, age 20; Martha Craft Gray, age 18; and Helen Craft, age 16; were recorded as minors without any guardian.
The court decided to appoint a Commissioner to sale Edward's estate because:
"That an actual partitions of the lands themselves cannot be made without injury to the parties interest, owing to the very small size each share each would be entitled to by division, and the sale of said lands would be more advantageous to all the parties interested than an actual partition."
