Biography*

Herbert farmed his entire life in Greene County. Herbert was a sharecropper and he and his wife had eleven children. They were known to argue like "cats and dogs" until someone else came up and then they could turn it off like a spigot acting like they were so in love they could not stand it. Herbert, like most of his brothers and sisters, like to take a drink now and then. He is remembered for the following when he might have had one or two too many. He would ask those around him to go outside in the yard with him so that they could catch 'hanks' and hang them on the "re-de-ator" of the car to dry out.⁴

Biography*

Grandpa "Buck" was a farmer who lived, farmed, and died on Nobles Road at Plot #1124 Pitt County, NC. Shortly after marring Woody, Grandpa Buck had problems with his mail being misplaced so Averitt was changed to Avery.

Reuben Kinsaul, Rittie Kinsaul Avery's twin brother, played a big part in the Avery family's life. He helped his sister, Rittie, with her children and affairs when her husband, John J. Averett, didn't return after the Civil War.

According to family stories, Ruben and his wife Nancy had one daughter. All three of them became extremely sick with influenza and sadly both Nancy and their daughter died and are buried in a cemetery on their farm.

Ruben, now needing someone to care for him, asked Buck, James Henry Avery, and his wife to take care of him. They agreed. At the time, they had been renting a house and farm from Mr. Cobb on Nobel's Road since November 1891. Reuben traded Mr. Cobb his farm for this farm and moved in with James Henry and Woody. In return, he would leave them the farm in his will. He was living with them when he died in 1915.

For generations to come the Avery family engaged in farming and held large farming interests in Pitt and surrounding counties.

Biography*

James and his wife, Estelle, had three children and also raised Barbara Sermons the daughter of Earl Sermons, Estelle. Barbara's mother died as a result of giving birth to her. James was a farmer.

He owned cows and a bull. On an occasion when Edna Earl Pilgreen visited her Uncle James, she was wearing a red sweater and it must be true that bulls do not like red. On seeing Edna, the bull charged at her, luckily stopping at the fence. However, it did scare the dickens out of Edna.

John and his wife had five children he was a farmer and owned his farm. It was always said that in spite of being as ill as a hornet, he was a fine man. He was never known to cuss, but when he got angry or upset, he could be heard saying " God Dang It" over and over.^2,3

Maggie and her husband Thomas lived in the Ayden and Roundtree communities. They owned a farm where her grandson, Rex Smith, lives today. Thomas ran a tavern in Ayden located on West Third Street. Could this have been the tavern that Christopher Columbus Braxton Jr. was killed in on March 16, 1901?

Edna Earl Pilgreen, knew her as "Aunt Meg" and she used to visit Edna's parent's home; sometimes she stayed overnight.
