His age and place of birth are incorrect and the birth place of his parents was unknown to the informant. Although Hugh is listed as widowed in the 1930 census, his wife was still living. Ira Braxton's letter, here printed exactly as written, was a masterpice of advice to his nephews:
"Though I never saw youe, youe are my brother's children, now I want youe to conduct yourselves so that youe name may stand big amongst men now as your dead father is done and gone and can't give no advice. I will give youe mine, all tho I am old and all most blind. That is to shun all bad company for one bad horse will spoil a dozen colts, that is to shun all kinds of gambling such as horse racing, card playing or any other kind of gamblin, keep company with men in good credit and your names will soon stand by, be honest, deal justly with all men and all men will respect youe and God will respect youe.
"Now boys, if youe are all single yet I will teach youe how to chuse a good wife if your go to see a girl go some time when she is not looking for youe and stay until breakfast next morning and see if she gets up early and makes up the beds and sweeps the floor and brushes down the pot trimbels before she hangs up the pot, look on the shelves, mind that her shoes is not on slip shod and if there is no holes for stockeens heels and is she makes good coffee she will do. If youe should marry them try to both pull together for in one pulls back and one fored youe will soon get into the mire.
"But if youe do go to see a girl that lies in bed til the sun is up and then cals dady to fetch her some water to wash and runs to the glass to fix her hear and has a hoop on big enuf to go around a bacco hogset and chanes in her years long enough for drowing chains, let them slide, for that is nothing but pride, although I have my grandchildren that is so proud of there hoopes and chances that it seems the ground is not good enuf for them to walk on."2

Hart was appointed guardian for the minor heirs of Warren for the purpose of protecting their rights in the division of Warren's Estate.

The minor heirs were Rosa D. Davenport, Cesna (sp) Braxton, J .D. Griffin, Louisa Braxton, Melisia Braxton, Patsy B. Braxton, James A. Braxton, Celesia (sp) Braxton and Mary J. Braxton. This Court Order is recorded in Orders and Decrees Book 2, Page 492..4

Deed*He was the owner of the land adjoining State of North Carolina's property at Swift Creek, Pitt County, North Carolina, on 05/04/1778. As recorded in this Land Grant, a survey was completed on September 21, 1778, and the land was described as 200 acres being on the "South Side of the West Prong of Swifts Creek" beginning at the corner of James Braxton's property and adjacent to Samuel Cannon's land. The Grant was witnessed by Tho. Braxton and Paul Scale. The Land Grant is recorded at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville, North Carolina in Deed Book No. 29, page 253 as Grant Number 3 issued on July 1, 1779. Again, since family members often witnessed the deeds for relatives, Tho and John were most likely closely related.

Deed*James received a 100 acres Land Grant from the State of North Carolina at South Side of Tar River, Pitt County, North Carolina, on 08/15/1780. The land was described in this Land Grant as "100 acres" on the "South Side of the Tar River...Beginning at a line in John Braxton's line...to a line in James Braxton's line the… " From later deeds, we also know this land was on the "South Side of the West Prong of Swift Creek". One interesting aspect of the land grant is that on one page of the grant John Braxton's name was been recorded as the grantee and then John was crossed through and James was written above John. In all other areas of the deed, James was recorded as the grantee. John Braxton and John Lester witnessed the grant. The Land Grant is stored at the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina in Book number 57 as Grant number 713 and File number 833. Since family members often witnessed the deeds for relatives, James and John were most likely closely related, perhaps father and son.

The following entry was made of his household: Free White Males 16 years of age or older, 2; Free White Males less 16 years of age, 5; Free White Females, 4; all other persons, 0; Slaves, 0. His entry is recorded on page 458 of the 1790 Pitt County, North Carolina Federal Population Census.4

This deed is recorded at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville, North Carolina in Deed Book O, Pages 169-170.
