She received a mortgage at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 04/17/1876. Richard and his wife Martha, Apsley Craft, Richard's sister, and Mary Craft, Richard's sister, took a mortgage for $127.50 at 8% per year against land they owned. The mortgage was executed on March 31, 1876 and was due May 1, 1876. There were two tracts of land involved: The "Old William Barbor" tract containing 105 acres more or less and another tract containing 35 acres more or less. The mortgage deed for this transaction is recorded in Book E3, Page 35.

This mortgage is somewhat of a mystery. They borrowed $127.50 for one month. From Kevin Craft's email dated 10-30-01, we now know that they needed the money to cover the doctors bill for Mary's 2 year old son, Hazzard. It is still unkown where they planned to obtain the funds, in such a short time period, to pay the money back. Whatever their plan, it did not materialize; Sophia foreclosed and their land was sold at public auction..¹

Deed*
