John was recorded as a 16 year-old labor and as being born in North Carolina. Bryan was 32 and the other members of his household were: Lalitha Smith, female, age 24; William H. Smith, male, age 9; Alnes Smith, male, age 7; Lewis C. Smith, male, age 1.

Bryan was a farmer and his personal real estate was valued at $1,700.

Their entry was recorded in the Tafts District of the Pitt County Federal Population Census on Page 28B, household 472.

A further review of the 1850 Census finds John's brother, Silas, age 16, living in the household of 66 year-old Sally Butler Averett. At this time, it is not possible to determine the exact relationship between John and Silas and Sally. She is a little old to have been their mother. She would have been 50 when John was born and 47 when Silas was born. She may have been their grandmother. For now we will assume she was their mother and continue our research.

Deed*John sold property at Swift Creek, Pitt County, North Carolina, on 09/26/1846. John Smith sold him an undisclosed amount of land on the South side of Swift Creek for $150. The year before, Warren paid $150 for 50 acres. This deed was probably for approximately 50 acres. The deed is very difficult to read and is recorded in Deed Book LL, Page 291 at the Pitt County Courthouse, Greenville, North Carolina. John Cox the brother of Sarah Cox Braxton, Warren's wife, witnessed the deed.

According to Dee Anna Braxton Pellegrino, her grandmother, Laura Smith Braxton, is on the far left. The other ladies are Laura's sister and sisters in law. Aunt Carrie Manning (who lived to be 101) is on the back row (tall lady) ... two of the other ladies are Aunt Martha Braxton and Nina (Laura's sister).... and she thinks the lady next to her grandma is the lady who married one of her Granddaddy's brothers who moved to California, ca 1942.
