| Biography* |
In later life, John was bald on top, suffered with asthma, and in later life had heart problems that eventually killed him. John's grand daughters, Pholia Gertrude Pilgreen Dunn and Edna Earl Pilgreen Braxton, said that they had heard all of their lives that that John was the father of Mary Buck. Her mother Mandy Colville Buck Pilgreen married John Thomas Pilgreen after Mary's birth.
Sadly, when his second wife, Mandy, died John decide that he and his new wife, Patty, either could not or could not be bothered with raising his and Mandy's daughter Carrie who was 4 or 5. John heartbreakingly gave her away to people he knew that lived in the Western part of the state. She reportedly cried and cried as they loaded her up and took her away. Later it was reported that she attended her father's funeral.
John also threw out of his house his step daughter and daughter of Mandy, Mary Cox, after her mothers death when she was 13. She first lived with Herbert Avery and then with others after he made a pass at her. Later on his death bed Herbert apologized to Mary for this incident and asked for her forgiveness. She kneeled down beside his bed and prayed for him. She must have been an exceptional person. What makes this story even sadder is according to John's granddaughters, Pholia Gertrude Pilgreen Dunn and Edna Earl Pilgreen; they had heard all of their lives that Mary's daddy was in fact John. Her mother, Mandy Colville Buck Pilgreen, married John after Mary's birth.
As you can guess, there were many who did not think very much of John Thomas. His daughter-in-law, Ellen Avery Pilgreen, was one of those. However, her husband, John Thomas' son John Robert, although he was not proud of many of the things his father did, he loved him right up to the day he died.
Although, he was quite poor in later life, according to family stories, at on time he was well off and he owned a large farm and beautiful horses. He was know for a big gold ring, a gold pocket watch and chain that he twirled around, and the beautiful horse and buggy he rode around in all dressed up in his Sunday best. And he was known as a lady's man. Unfortunately, as the result of a hard life style, he had nothing left towards the end of his life. His son, John, and his daughter, Minnie, paid to have him buried.2
