Carter Braxton was born of a wealthy family in Newington Plantation Virginia. He lost nearly all of his wealth in the course of the revolution, partly through his support of the Union, and partly through attack by the British forces. He was educated at William and Mary College. He married at age 19, but his wife died about two years after. He then went to England for a little more than two years. In 1760 he returned, married again, and was appointed to represent King William county in the Virginia House of Burgesses. He was in attendance 1765, when Patrick Henry's Stamp Act resolutions agitated the Assembly. In 1769 he joined the "radical" faction of the Burgesses in support of Virginia's sole right to tax inhabitants. When the house was dissolved in 1774 he joined the patriot's Committee of Safety in Virginia, and represented his county in the Virginia Convention. In 1775, upon the sudden death of •Peyton Randolph, Braxton was selected to assume his place in the Continental Congress. He attended two years, after which he returned to Virginia to continue service to the House of Burgesses. During the War, he had loaned £10,000 sterling to support the revolutionary cause. He had also used his wealth to sponsor shipping and privateering during the conflict, the losses from which eventually resulted in debt. He never recovered, and, in 1786, was forced to leave his inherited country estate for simple quarters in Richmond. He died at age 61. He was born on September 10, 1736. He died on October 10, 1797 at age 61.1

Deed*Cennetta gave property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 08/20/1886 to his wife Cennetta. In conjunction with the Dower of Right recording on August 20, 1886 between Warren and Cennetta Tripp Braxton, in which they agree to live separate and apart, Warren gave Cennetta 11 acres. The deed is recorded at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville, North Carolina in Deed Book N4, Page 397 and the tract of land is described as follows:

".... Adjoining Redding Snippe, Benjamin Moye in Contentena Township and being the pond Land pine Chased of Lorenzo McGlowhon Ten acres and Henry Kitrell one acre. Containing Eleven acres more or less...."

Deed*Cennetta sold property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 11/20/1890. Cennetta name was spelled Cenetnea and Senetten in this deed. The deed reads as follws: "... Witnesseth, that said Cenetnea Braxton for the Consideration of the nattural love and affection and the consideration of one dollars, to me paid by the said Frances V, Nine...Excepting my life Estate on the same in this Certain Tracts or parcels of land Deeded by Warren Braxton to the said Cenetnea Braxton One tract Deeded to Warren Braxton by Harry Kitrell and wife Lousia also one tract deeded from Lorenzi McLawhorn wife Susan E. to the said Warren Braxton first tract Containing one acre. One other tract Containing ten acres more or less adjoining the lands of Reding Tripp Benjamin Moye and others..."

This deed is recorded at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greeville North Carolina in Deed Book A5, Page 497..13 
Dower Rights*On Janaury 1, 1894, Cennetta Tripp Braxton was granted Dower Rights by Superior Court of Pitt County and the proceedings are recorded in Book 2, Page 182 of the Special Proceedings Docket. On this date, Cennetta petitioned the Clerk of the Superior Court to reinstate her Dower right in two tracts of land that her husband, Warren Braxton, now deceased had owned. Warren's children protested this actions and it was not resolved until 1899..14 
Deed*She sold property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on on 09/10/1898. D. N. Branch purchased this tract of land from the heirs of Hardy Tripp. The deed reads as follows: "...Situated in Contentnea township adjoining the lands of W. Tucker, Bryant Tripp nd others and being the land Formerly deeded by D. N. Branch to Hardy Tripp, deceased, containing ten acres more or less..." In addition to Cenetta, the heirs were D. M. Manning and Louisa Manning his wife and E. S. Edwards and Sarah Edwards his wife.

From a review of other records, we know that Louisa and Sarah were Cenetta's sisters.

This deed is recorded at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville, NC in Deed Book K6, Page 198..15 
Estate Division*She bought part of the Estate of Warren Braxton. In accordance to the order issued by the Superior Court of Pitt County Jesse Cannon, administrator for the estate of Warren Braxton, deceased, sold part of Warren's estate at public auction on January 12, 1899. Cenetta paid three hundred dollars for these 59 acres, which appears to have been the last of the land owned by her husband, Warren Braxton. His home place may have been located on this land. This deed is recorded at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville, North Carolina in Deed Book R6, Page 41-43. The land was described as:

"...adjoining the lands of Fred McLawhorn, the Sam Manning land, and others, containing fifty-nine (59) ares more or less..."

Biography* Cennetta's name has been spelled several different ways throughout the many records she appears in. The spellings include: Cennetta, Cenetta, Cettie, Senettie, and Cenneta. In most of her records throughout her life, her name was spelled Cennetta.

Living in their household were their son Johnny, age 1 and Elizabeth Griffin, age 18. Elizabeth was Sarah's sister and in 1881, she would marry Warren's brother Felix W. Braxton. Christopher was a farmer, Sarah kept house, and Elizabeth was a Domestic Servant. His real estate was valued at $300 and his personal estate was valued at $100. His household was recorded in the Pitt County, North Carolina 1870 Federal Population Census as number 148 on Page 105B under the Bridge's Ferry's Post Office.

A fact found in this census that ties Christopher to the Ayden area is that the Biggs Harrington's farm is recorded seven farms from Warren's farm. This Harrington farm was part of the land that Heber Warren Braxton bought just West of Ayden in 1952.

Biography* According to census records and his estate records, Christopher was a farmer for most of his life. He raised hogs and cattle and he farmed corn, cotton and tobacco. He was also a businessman. In a May 15, 1889 article in the Eastern Reflector it was reported that, he opened a saw mill in Redalia. From a review of his historical records, we know that he owned at least two saw mills; one of which he still owned at the time of his death. He must have also been a community leader. According to a September 14, 1887 article in the Eastern Reflector, he was a school committeeman. According to family stories, Christopher and Sarah may have had a family portrait made after each of the children's birth. Marisa Davenport Forrest has the only known portrait of just Christopher and Sarah (circa 1867-1869).16,17,18,13,14

Will*He made a Will at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 02/16/1861. From the Wills and Testaments, Book 1, at the Pitt County Courthouse in Greevile, North Carolina, we know Council died on February 16, 1861. His wife was recorded as Sarah and the following individuals were mentioned in his Will: Augustus and Frances M. Braxton, sons; Arcenea, daughter of Council and wife of John Lockomy; Martha Moye, granddaughter; Caleb Cannon, witness; J.A. Worthington, witness; Negros, Henry, Harriet, Dick and John; Negro boy, Albert.

Deed*Council bought property at Pitt County, North Carolina, on 08/06/1861. I have also discovered in the Record of Estates 1858-1871, Part 2, Page 703-705 for the estate sale of Council Braxton, that Joel's sons, Felix and Warren, were listed on August 6th 1861 as owing Council Braxton $166.50 that they borrowed on February 10th 1860. Since the banking institutions were not well established, it was not unusual for family members to borrow money from each other during this time period.

Biography* Council was approximately 5 years older then Joel Braxton, lived in close proximity of Joel in 1830 and 1840, lived close to Joel’s sons (Warren and Felix, married to Sarah) in 1850 and 1860.
