State of North Carolina
?, #2485
| Deed* | State sold property at Horse Pen Branch, Pitt County, North Carolina, on 09/19/1772.1 |
| Deed* | State sold property at South Side of Tar River, Pitt County, North Carolina, on 08/15/1780. The land was described in this Land Grant as "100 acres" on the "South Side of the Tar River...Beginning at a line in John Braxton's line...to a line in James Braxton's line the… " From later deeds, we also know this land was on the "South Side of the West Prong of Swift Creek". One interesting aspect of the land grant is that on one page of the grant John Braxton's name was been recorded as the grantee and then John was crossed through and James was written above John. In all other areas of the deed, James was recorded as the grantee. John Braxton and John Lester witnessed the grant. The Land Grant is stored at the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina in Book number 57 as Grant number 713 and File number 833. Since family members often witnessed the deeds for relatives, James and John were most likely closely related, perhaps father and son.
